Uma Fernandes BEM

Uma Fernandes is a distinguished individual whose extensive career has left an indelible mark on healthcare, international development, and leadership. With over four decades of dedicated service, Uma has consistently worked to improve the well-being of individuals and communities on both local and global scales.

 

Uma's journey in healthcare began in 1970 and spanned more than 45 years, during which she held various critical roles, including State Registered Nurse, Midwife, Nurse Practitioner, Executive Nurse, and Matron. Her expertise and unwavering commitment to patient care left a profound impact on countless lives.

 

Uma's passion for making a global impact led her to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where she served as a Midwife and Neonatal Nurse from 2008 to 2015. As the Lead Adviser and Implementor for the government's health project Umubano, Uma played a pivotal role in ensuring that healthcare staff provided high-quality care within the constraints of limited resources. Her dedication and negotiation skills significantly improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Sierra Leone.

 

Uma's enthusiasm for coaching led her to become a qualified Corporate and Executive Coach through the Coaching Academy in 2008. Her commitment to personal and professional development is evident in her role as a Professional Executive Nurse/Coach for the NW London Foundation Trust in 2010. Her coaching skills have empowered numerous colleagues to deliver quality care and enhance team performance, aligning with WHO recommendations and government health policies.

 

Uma's impact extended to the political arena, where she served as an elected Local Councillor in the London Borough of Brent from 1994 to 2010. Her leadership and negotiation skills were crucial in effectively representing her constituents. She also stepped onto the national stage as a parliamentary candidate in 2001 and 2003, becoming a respected public speaker at various political and nursing conferences, inspiring and influencing many.

 

Uma's role as a teacher at The College of Nursing/Makeni University in Sierra Leone not only contributed to educating the next generation of healthcare professionals but also strengthened her relationships with colleagues in the healthcare and political sectors. Her expertise in leadership, coaching, and public speaking, coupled with her unique experience as a local politician, allowed her to effectively negotiate policies at the local government level and represent the government at national conferences in the UK.
